開会の辞

第6回舶用機関国際シンポジウム

組織委員会委員長 佐藤準一

Distinguished Guests, Ladies and Gentlemen, On behalf of the Organizing Committee of this Symposium,

I am delighted to extend a very warm welcome to all of you as the guests and delegates from 23 countries to attend the 6th International Symposium on Marine Engineering under the auspices of the Marine Engineering Society in Japan, in cooperation with the Institute of Marine Engineers in the U.K. and the friendly societies in Japan.

The first ISME has been held in Tokyo in 1973. The numbers of Technical Papers presented were 91 and the numbers of Exhibitions were 0 at the first Symposium.

During the intervening 27 years, every field of marine engineering has developed remarkably through 4 ISME Symposia in 1978, 1983, 1990 and 1995.

On this occasion, I sincerely express our hearty gratitude to the Ministry of Transport for their cordial guidance, to the Nippon Foundation for their generous financial support and to the friendly societies for their cooperation which made the Symposia so successful up to now.

This Symposium will present the most up to date information on various aspects of marine engineering, both current and future, focusing on the subject "Expectation for the Emergence and Develop-ment of New Technologies in Marine Engineering".

I think that the key words of the important problems in new technology can be collected into "three high and two low requirements". These are likened to the "Marine Engineering Mountains" consisting of three peaks and two canyons.

Three peaks mean high quality, high reliability and high safety. Two canyons mean low emission (pollution) and low cost.

In the former three peaks the higher is the better and in the latter two canyons the lower is the better, but the conquest of the mountains is difficult without a development of science and technology.

With courage and conviction, let us challenge together against these difficulties in the Marine Engineering Mountains with the development of new science and technology.

It is encouraging to note that most of the papers and exhibitions are in line with the subject.

I should like to express my sincere thanks to the authors of special and key note lectures, technical papers, panel discussions and technical exhibitions for their challenge to the new technology.

Then I should like to encourage the chairpersons of technical paper sessions and panels to put enthusiasm into discussions.
