INTERNATIONAL ELECTROTECHNICAL COMMISSION

TECHNICAL COMMITTEE NO.18 ELECTRICAL INSTALLATIONS OF SHIPS AND OF MOBILE AND FIXED OFFSHORE UNITS

Meeting of IEC/TC 18, 14th to 16th October 1998 in Houston.

Second meeting day, 15th October - Daily Report

11. To receive and consider the report from Sub-Committee 18A Cables and cable installations

18(Houston/SC18A)15

The Chairman of SC 18A, Mr.J.Ward, presented the report commenting on the different items dealt with during the SC 18A meeting. The report generally reflected good progress in the work of SC 18A. He underlined in particular the work of WG 1 on the revision of IEC 60092-352 and a CD will be presented within 2 months to both SC 18A and TC 18/WG 18. The discussion on the matter of high-voltage cables was deferred to the TC 18/WG-meetings.

SC 18A were advised by TC 18/WG 18 that the question of fiber optic cables and the offshore and marine requirements will be advised to SC 18A in due course. Similarly the need for investigation into the application of subsea cables will also be addressed by WG 18 some time in the future, at which time 18A will be advised of TC 18's requirements.

A comment on fire resistant cables made by Mr.Ward prompted discussion on their usage in marine and offshore applications. Mr.Ward subsequently advised that the development of these cable standards is already included in the programme of 18A.

TC 18/WG 18 agreed to advise Mr.Ward in writing of the voltage range of cables to be used and included in their work. The use of flexible cables up to 33 kV was discussed at length including their flexibility in installation on offshore structures.

Some discussion took place regarding the use of performance requirements rather than prescriptive standards. No action was proposed at this time.

The argument of withdrawal of lEC 60092-3 continued for some time and finally Mr.Ward described the method by which 18A would withdraw the standard and satisfy the requirements and concerns of the US and other delegations.

Mr.Ward explained in detail SC 18A's method of satisfying the new IEC maintenance system for standards, and indicated that they initially would use a 4 year cycle.

The Chairman thanked Mr.Ward for his extensive report.
