of vehicles. Bicycle is also an important mode of transport, accounting for 5% of total vehicles. Apart from these vehicles, there are 26,700 commercial vehicles (lorries and trucks) in Bangalore.
Table 2.3-1 shows the steep increase in ownership of private car and two wheelers due to the in adequacy of mass transportation. The number of vehicles registered increase at 9% per annum which is higher than the growth rate of population. If the present rate is maintained, the estimated registered number of vehicles is likely to increase to nearly one million by 2001.
2.3.2 Travel Characteristics
The Household Traffic Survey conducted for the feasibility study of Mass Rapid Transit System presents the following travel characteristics in Bangalore.
(1) Vehicle Ownership
The vehicle ownership per population including bicycle is 18.9%. Around 37% of vehicles owned are scooter / motor cycles and also 37% are bicycles. The car / jeeps are owned 6.8%. A distinct feature of vehicle ownership in Bangalore is the increasing of two wheelers.
