2.3 Urban Transport
2.3.1 Means of Urban Transport
The urban transport in Bangalore depends on the road based transport system and consists of following transport means;
(1) Mass Public Transport
In the absence of any urban railway service, bus service is only one mass transport system in Bangalore, The bus services are provided by Bangalore Transport Service Division (BTS) which is a part of the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) in Bangalore City and around Bangalore up to a distance of 37 km. They operate services with nearly 2,000 busses on 865 city and suburban routes over 412 thousand km per day. They carry 2.4 million passengers daily in 1994. There are three large bus terminal, namelly Bangalore Bus Station, City Market and Shivajinagar Bus Station.
The city and sub-urban bus services consists of ordinary express service and pushpack with deluxe coaches services. They have a different fare system. The fare level of pushpack services is more than three times as much as that of ordinary services.
In spite of the large bus system of the BTS, Bangalore is served by less number of buses for its population compared to other major cities, like Delhi and Madras. The other major problems of bus transport are the lack of adequate facilities in terms of depots, workshop etc. and the adequate road space in the city.
(2) Intermediate Public Transport System
This consists of autorickshaws and Taxies. In addition, some of large public sector and private undertakings have their own transport system in form of buses and mini buses. The large number of autorickshaws about 25,000 serve the common people, particularly middle class, in daily trips next to bus service. Taxies are few in number and are not very popular.
(3) Personalized Transport
Cars, Vans, Motor cycles, Scooters, Mopeds are the major mode of private transport.
The two wheelers constitute nearly 75% of total number of vehicles and are the most popular transport mode in Bangalore. Cars constitute about 14% of the total number
