The Division, because of its heavier academic load, has fewer major
elective courses - Nautical Sicence Systems Engineering Course and Engine Systems
Engineering Course. Students in Nautical Sicence Systems Engineering Course have to take
subjects in navigation-related field within 20 credits and Engine Systems Engineering
Course students should follow an additional engineering-related subjects within 20
credits. This feature allows time for maritime transportation science studies and marine
engineering studies respectively.
Students majoring in Ship Operation Systems Engineering can choose one
of two available courses to follow, both of which serve as preparation for the third
ship's officer licence examination. They receive professional preparation as both deck and
engineering officers, leading to licencing as both a third mate and a third assistant
engineer. The ship's officer licence graduate is qualified to fill licenced shipboard
positions requiring skills in both the deck and engineering departments. The demands of
completing the requirements for two licences in four academic years does not allow for
many free electives.

Graduates of this major can basically apply the exam for a third ship's
officer licence, but students in each course according to the course they have chosen are
also able to earn a third mate's licence or a third engineer's licence respectively.
The Ship Operation Systems Engineering major gives the student a firm
foundation in two critical areas of nautical science and marine engineering. In
particular, the Nautical Science Systems Engineering Course students have the same
nautical science background as the Maritime Transportation Science Major, and by using
electives, can take the same maritime business core subjects.
The Common Core Major curriculum for Ship's Officer Licence in the
second and third year is as follows:
