The purpose of the Ship Operation Systems Engineering Programme is to
produce a Ship's officer who is well prepared for the new generation of modern, efficient
vessels with unattended enginerooms. These vessels feature engine control and monitoring
equipment on the navigating bridge. The Ship Operation Systems Engineering major is
prepared originally to take the third ship's officer examination, but students in the
Division can take either the third mate's licence examination or the third engineer's
licence according to the elective major course they have taken. Students are also able to
graduate with an enhanced knowledge of pragmatic marine engineering and maritime
transportation science, by taking Free Choice Subjects within the range of 20 credits.
