D. Maritime Police Science (Department) : The coursework offered by the
curriculum includes theoretical and practical education necessary to develop merchant
marines and maritime policemen. Students who successfully complete the course, receive the
degree of bachelor of engineering and, after passing the required examinations a licence
as a third mate or a third engineer.
(3) Licence Programme
In the latter half of third year midshipmen can take a comprehensive
written examination, administered by the KMPA, for their licences as merchant marine
officers and engineers. Those who have selected the Maritime Transportation Science major
and the Navigation Course of Maritime Police Science major receive training in nautical
science to prepare for the third mate (deck officer) licence examination. Marine
Engineering major and the Marine Engineering Course of Maritime Police Science receive
marine engineering training to prepare for the third engineer (engineering officer)
licence examination. Ship Operation Systems Engineering major receive training in nautical
science and selected marine engineering areas and take the licence examination for ship's
officer. Otherwise, students can apply to the licence examination for deck officer or
engineer officer, according to their elective major courses which receive either nautical
science or marine engineering instruction.
(4) Elective Major Courses
Elective major courses are a programme by which students may enhance
their maritime-related knowledge and satisfy their intellectual curiosity, on top of the
common core subjects of each major programme. While the Maritime Transportation Science
Division comprises 2 elective major courses, the Marine Engineering Division has 4
elective major courses. The Ship Operation Systems Engineering and Maritime Police Science
Division offer two elective courses. However, all students of the College of Maritime
Sciences are encouraged to take additional free elective courses when academically
possible.
(5) Shipboard Training
All students in Maritime College should spend at least one-year at sea
aboard either Training Ship or merchant ships during their third year. The philosophy that
underlies the shipboard training is that the combination of training and sea experience
must prepare student for command in the merchant marine. The abilities which a shipboard
officer requries are to lead his men effectively, navigate his ship safely, and conduct
himself diplomatically. Thus the areas which the Colege cover in the sea training are
leadership, seamanship, and navigation. This programme is explained in detail in the
Shipboard Training section.
