During the first (freshman) year, students should follow a common core
curriculum of courses. From the second year, however, the courses students can take at the
University vary greatly depending upon the major students select. The following is a
detailed description of the major curriculums and the course of study entails beginning in
the second year.
(1) Division of Maritime Transportation Science
Students who elect to major in Maritime Transportation Science learn
the technical and professional skills needed by deck officers through two concurrent and
interrelated curricula, maritime management science and maritime information engineering.
The Division of Maritime Transportation Science, therefore, offers courses in two
groupings: the Maritime Management Science Course and the Maritime Information Engineering
Course. In both curricula, the required courses are supplemented with a wide variety of
electives.
Both courses are given in the core curriculum to provide students with
knowledge on the nautical science, as well as a knowledge of the transportation process
necessary for successful careers in the maritime industry. The common core curriclum -
Nautical Science - prepares students specifically for their shipboard responsibilities and
the third mate's licence examination. In doing so, it also provides a broad
marine-oriented education to produce a well-trained and informed ship's officer. The
course of study includes general as well as specific maritime subjects which familiarise
students with a ship as a system, including its equipment and operation. Also covered are
physical, economic, environmental and regulatory concerns. Specifically, students have to
study such areas as navigation and the rules for collision avoidance, naval architecture,
materials handling, shipboard and portside cargo operations, safety of life at sea,
pollution control, meteorology and oceanography, and the various domestic and
international rules and regulations that govern these activities.
The following is the common core curriculum for nautical science in the
third year:
