Attitude is how a person feels about something. Thus, a person is
generally regarded as having either a bad (negative) or a good (positive) attitude.
Attitude towards others, work and responsibility, safety, etc. Values on the other hand
are in-depth perceptions of what is good, right and importance of certain qualities.
Positive values include tolerance, caring, honesty, integrity, a strong sense of
responsibility and commitment and team spirit.
It is very difficult to develop attitudes and enhance values in a
person. However, there are many ways in which such qualities can be nurtured. In the
campus environment of ALAM, these include specially tailored courses and training
activities designed for the purpose, teachers and peers, organisational culture and
environment.
Every batch of students undergo an intensive one-week programme on
attitude development and motivation. The aim of the course is to develop positive
attitudes in the students, self-confidence, endurance and team spirit. The programme also
help promote patriotism and pride in the profession. Counseling sessions are also given
throughout the course and students are encouraged to develop mutual respect and tolerance
among themselves particularly with regards to culture, religion and ethnicity.
Extracurricular activities in many ways also help enhance positive attitudes. Group work
whether in sports or training projects can help develop team spirit and cooperation.
Staff particularly teachers are an important role model to students and
over time can greatly influence their attitudes and values system. Teachers' disposition
and behavior can help reinforce or undermine the positive attitudes and values already
existing in the students. To become a good role model, teachers must therefore be required
to have good disposition and behaviour, courteous, well attired, punctual and maintain
