Interpersonal and management skills will be enhanced through a
specially tailored training module on management. The module covers in addition to general
management practice, aspects of leadership, motivation, problem solving team building and
communication.
The students' extracurricular programmes and activities as well as
their general campus life provide many opportunities for acquiring useful skills. Most
extracurricular exercise such as sports, sailing and other recreational activities are
organised by the students themselves. Through these activities, they are able to acquaint
themselves with aspects of leadership, management and interpersonal relations.
Students also manage and administer their own social and welfare club.
The operations of the club entail the election of office bearers, conducting meetings,
organising activities such as camping and dinners. This involvement exposes them to all
aspects of the above-mentioned skills.
There are several activities to cater for communication skills (writing
and speaking). Apart from extensive use of the language laboratory to enhance the command
of English language and improve speaking ability, the students have regular debates and
public speaking sessions. Assignments and projects on the other hand train them in the
area of writing skill especially report writing.
Use of the computer laboratory enable students to acquire and improve
their skill and familiarity with the various softwares relevant to the work onboard - word
processing, ship inventory, stability programs and cargo and ballast programs.
