cargowork and shipboard safety will not be neglected. These are largely
carried out through evening projects and extracurricular activities.
Interpersonal and management skills
Life on a ship is often tough and trying. Shipboard environment confine
people to work, eat and sleep, and virtually live together for long periods. Understanding
human behavior and interpersonal relations under such circumstances is very important. A
ship is a huge plant, a moving asset, a complete organisation. Managing a ship is no
different from and perhaps more demanding than managing other types of organisation.
Since ship personnel in the course of their work have to carry out
tasks, execute plans, supervise, manage, counsel and resolve conflict, the following areas
of skills would be necessary even at the junior level:
* handling people
* dealing with cultural differences
* counseling
* conflict management
* communication skills
* decision making and problem solving
* computer and information system
TET therefore aims to provide a general understanding and basic
exposure on interpersonal and management skills through specially programmed activities as
well as within the general curriculum and activities.
