1. INTRODUCTION

Marine higher education is a form of special education in Romania as well as in other countries of the world.

It's peculiarity lies in:

- the assimilation of knowledge and international regulation;

- a higher share of training programs within the educational process;

-the necessity of a good physical and mental condition.

Many questions may arise in this respect.

What is the part played by the academic formation, bearing in mind the continual growth of maritime industry?

Being known that a large number of the graduates from the Maritime Institutes are absorbed by various companies that work in shipping, on-shore, one may ask whether the seamanship training is satisfactory? In other words, must the training of the marine officers be restricted only to the ruling and controlling of these complex and varied equipments that make up a vessel or should they become operational and, why no4 conception engineers?

Can further steps be taken in this field with the help of thorough post-university studies?

In this work I shall present you the way in which the Romanian marine education has tried to give some answers to the above questions.

2. THE MERCHANT MARITIME INSTITUTE STRUCTURE
