"ENGINEER AND MARITIME OFFICER
- double qualification or the necessity of better training
required by the development of the maritime industry"

Prof.dr. Dumitru DINU

MERCHANT MARINE INSTITUTE
CONSTANTZA, ROMANIA

ABSTRACT

The main reasons for the complex training are the following:

- request for specialized staff both "off shore" and "on shore";

- opportunities of finding a job, especially for girls, infields related to shipping;

- more and more sophisticated facilities on board ships.

The Merchant Marine Institute gives its undergraduates the possibility to acquire both an academic education, according to the standards of the Ministry of Education and a specialized training as required by IMO - STCW.

The setting up and improvement of the curriculum that should answer the requirement of university level education and the international standards of maritime training has not been an easy task.

The Navigation & Maritime Transport Faculty, extending on five year period, trains deck officers for the marine merchant fleet and engineers for marine management.

The Electromechanical Faculty, extending on a five year period, trains mechanical and electric engineers for marine merchant fleet.

The River Transport College trains deck and engine officers for the inland water ships.

On graduation the students take a license exam and a maritime certificate exam.

The academic training allows our graduates to take studies for a master degree and then for a doctor degree.

The teaching system in our institute has been devised to respond to the recent developments in advanced shipboard and port technology.
