MAJOR RESEARCH AREAS

Information exchange and decision support systems

Today paper based reporting of technical information from machinery and deck on board ships gives limited possibilities to recover important information and for grouping data related to each other, as a basis for decision making. The project illustrated in Figure 3, is dealing with Shipowners' development of future information management tools and systems for use of computer systems for reporting and performance evaluation, used in decision support in operation and maintenance. Collected information will be used to compare performance between similar system installations on different ships.

Important elements will be efficient communication between ship and shore. New satellite communication systems will in the near future open for lower cost and possibility for high speed exchange of essential information. This will be the basis for better decisions both on board, in the shipowner's office and in cooperation with equipment suppliers and classification societies.
