Objectives

 

The primary objective of the programme is to:

 

Improve competitiveness through development of new operating concepts and information systems in shipping companies, in close cooperation with equipment suppliers, classification societies and authorities.

 

The programme focus on the following areas as shown in Figure 1 and 2:

 

Information handling - decision-support systems

The objectives of this part of the programme are to develop systems that will make access to, and processing of information more efficient, and to develop new, expanded decision-support functions, which will form a basis for the design of flexible operational structures.

 

Organization, recruitment and training

With the objectives to develop operating strategies and types of organization that take into account the competence available in an organization. To develop efficient aids for training and competence assessment and to develop new forms of cooperations with external partners.

 

Support from suppliers

With the objective to develop services, systems and routines that are more useful to both suppliers and end-users. To establish channels of communication between these parties and make such communication more efficient.

 

Authorities and classification societies

The goal of this part is to strengthen the position of the flag-state regime via better documentation of the standard of the vessels by introducing efficient inspection and reporting systems, minimizing the inspection requirements of the port state and the charterer.

 

Information modelling

The objectives are to design and develop information and enterprise models that can act as basis for developing operational strategies with flexible methods of operation, and development of information and communication systems and decision support functions.

 

This project area shall be a basic support to the other projects, in their work of analysis, development of systems and organizational structures.

 

IT - Standards

International standards are important to strengthen the use of modular and open systems. The objective of this project area is to establish standards for exchange, storage and presentation of information in different departments of shipping companies, suppliers, classification societies and authorities.

 

Demonstrator projects

The programme has focused on practical solutions, to install these in participating organizations, on board and on shore for testing and evaluation.
