Migration Route of Aquatic Organism
・Natural Route
・ocean currents
・adhering to large migratory organisms such as whales and tuna
・global environmental changes
・Artificial Route
・Aquaculture including Seeding Discharge
・Coastal Development
・Ship's ballast water, etc.

Ballast Water Management under research and development in Japan
・Non-Ballast water ship
・Ballast water treatment technology
Filtration, Special Pipe system, chemical treatment (chlorine, hydrogen peroxide, ozone), electric chemical treatment, superconductivity, etc.
Ballast water treatment technology experimented by the JAMS
・1992: Chemical treatment (chlorine and hydrogen peroxide)
・1997: Chemical treatment (ozone)
・1998: Electric chemical treatment
・1999: Mixer Pipe
・2001: Special Pipe
・2002: Improved Special Pipe
・2003: Special Pipe (on board testing)
・2004: Hybrid Special Pipe system using ozone
Mechanical treatment (Prototype on board testing using the Improved Special Pipe system 2003): |
1) Organisms of 10-50um could be reduced to the level to meet D-2 standard regulated in the International Ballast Water Convention.
2) Organisms greater than or equal to 50μm could be reduced to comply with the D-2 standard in some cases.
3) Bacteria: Vibrio cholerae was not detected. Escherichia coli was found 1-3 cfu/100 ml at Los Angeles, Seattle and Vancouver, and it means complying with the D-2 standard.

Conclusion
・It is believed that Hybrid Special Pipe System using ozone is able to meet the standard regulated in the Ballast Water Convention.
・Further development for minimizing the purged Ozone, downsizing the whole system and Cost effectiveness are to be considered.
・Research and development for other measures are simultaneously planned.
