Diesel Engine
Akasaka Diesels' New Product: Akasaka-Mitsubishi UEC37LSII Diesel Engine
Akasaka Diesels Limited, a licensee of UE diesel engines, built the first unit of the UEC37LSII type, and delivered it for use as the propulsion unit of a cargo ship.
Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI), licensor of two-stroke single-acting crosshead type UE diesel engines, has developed the UEC37LSII type based on the performance records of similar models already in service, and added the new product to its existing line-up of six types of the UEC-LSII series ranging in cylinder bore from 850 mm to 330 mm.
■Features of UEC37LSII Engine
1) A more powerful variation of the UEC37LA type.
2) A simplified engine whose cylinder jackets and crankcase are monobloc casting.
3) A compact engine reduced in overall length by rationally arranging the gear system and superchargers.
4) A highly reliable engine whose exhaust valves and main bearing metals, which are key components of a two-stroke engine, embody the most advanced analytical technology.
5) An easy-to-maintain engine which has fewer parts due to simplified piping and other developments.
6) An easier-to-operate engine using an electronic governor.
7) A highly economical and environmentally friendly engine certified to meet the IMO 2000 NOx control requirement and boasting reduced specific fuel consumption.
■6UEC37LSII Engines in Service
6UEC37LSII type engines have already been in service for 10,000 hours in the seven seas of the world.
MHI and Akasaka Diesels have inspected such vital parts of these engines as pistons, cylinder liners, exhaust valves and main bearing metals, and confirmed that they are maintained in satisfactory condition and the engines are performing exactly as planned.
Their ease of maintenance, maneuvering and handling is appreciated by the users of these engines.

Fuji Trading Develops Inboard LAN System
- Installation Cost Saved by Use of Existing Inboard Network -
Fuji Trading Co., Ltd. has developed a system for an inboard data communication network (LAN) and a high-speed server which can utilize an existing inboard telephone network. Architecting an inboard computer network anew would require extensive cable laying.
The system developed by Fuji Trading, since it can utilize the existing inboard telephone network as is for the purpose of creating a LAN, makes possible substantial savings in both cost and time required for construction.
This system permits connection to the network anywhere the inboard telephone network is accessible, and facilitates system maintenance and alteration of or additions to the network. Moreover, as it uses a frequency band different from the telephone's, connection is possible without interrupting ordinary oral communication. Communication speed can be selected from two alternatives: 1 Mbps and 16 Mbps.
Fuji Trading markets an offshore-onshore satellite communication system, OnAir, which represents a fusion of the technology of Telesis North, a Canadian communication software house, and Telenor, a Norwegian telephone company. To date, system sets have been delivered for installation aboard some 620 vessels. Combining the recently developed inboard LAN system with OnAir would enable an inboard server to place data transmission and reception under its collective management and each terminal to send and receive e-mail. The inboard server has a high-speed communication capability due to the use of high-speed compressed software among others, and connecting the system just once will make possible transmission and reception of e-mail at every terminal.
Fuji Trading has already completed demonstration tests of the new system, and will seek orders mainly for installation in high value-added vessels, including LNG carriers.
