Pump

Heishin Develops World's First Vertical Twin Gear Pump
- Substantially Reducing installation Space -

Heishin Pump Works, a manufacturer of pumps for marine use, has succeeded in developing an vertical twin gear pump for the first time in the world, meeting shipowners' and shipbuilders' requirements for a space-efficient pump arrangement in the engine room, facilitation of maintenance and simplification (cost reduction) of pump installation work. Taking note of the traditional paired structure of existing pumps, Heishin has integrated a couple of conventional vertical gear pumps into a single module. The new product has the following advantages over existing pumps:

1. It occupies less than 1/4 the space of a horizontal pump (Heishin's comparable product). See figures.
2. Two pumps of the same or different specifications can be accommodated in a single housing (non-modular independent pumps can also be mounted).
3. As the outlets and inlets of the two pumps are positioned on the same side, piping can be minimized in terms of length and compactly arranged.
4. Since drain oil during maintenance work is kept within the housing but not allowed to flow out, no cleaning is required (an environmentally-friendly development).
5. The new product is most suitable where pumps which require heating are called for.

Heishin is confident that this new type pump can greatly contribute to savings in shipbuilding costs (for example, by reducing outfitting man-hours) while also helping to reduce shipowner costs through facilitated maintenance (i.e. through less labor, reductions in miscellaneous expenses and parts replacement costs on board).
Ever since it's founding in 1929, Heishin has given top priority to customer satisfaction in manufacturing and marketing a variety of marine pumps, oily water separators and oil discharge monitoring (ODM) systems. Years of experience allow the company to make the most of both technological resources and responsiveness to customer needs, and this policy is believed to have made possible the successful development of this vertical twin gear pump.

New Business Foothold

MCI New Partner in Europe

Since it's founding in 1941, Namirei-Showa has racked up many achievements in the designing and execution of soundproofing and thermal insulation as well as marine-use air conditioning and refrigerating systems. Especially in the designing and procurement of air conditioning and refrigerating systems, the company holds substantial shares in not only the domestic market, but also those in South Korea, China and Singapore. However, the range of its business activities was limited geographically to the Far East and, in terms of ship type, to general merchant vessels, coastal ferries and offshore structures.
It was against this background that Namirei-Showa in 2000 set up MCl-Namirei jointly with Marine Contracting International A/S (MCl), a Danish engineering firm with expertise in HVAC (Heating Ventilating and Air Conditioning) for passenger vessels. The joint venture was awarded a contract for the designing and procurement of air conditioning systems to be installed in two passenger ships under construction for P&O at the Nagasaki Shipyard of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries. The project is now successfully under way.
Namirei-Showa in 2001 acquired a capital stake in its new European partner, thereby further tightening the technical and financial ties between the two companies.
As is probably well known in Europe, MCI has a record of distinguished achievement in HVAC and automation designing for passenger ships and Ro-Pax (Roll on-Passenger) ferries. Today, it is doing active business in Italy, France, Greece and Spain, and intends to seek orders on a turnkey basis in collaboration with local engineering firms.
In addition to passenger ship and Ro-Pax projects, the joint venture will utilize the wealth of know-how Namirei-Showa has built up over the years to enter into the general merchant ship market by adding highquality and reasonably priced self-contained units available from Daikin Industries, of which it is an agent.
Namirei-Showa itself will receive technical support from MCl regarding passenger ships and Ro-Pax ferries, and is preparing itself for HVAC designing and construction for such vessels to be built in the Far East.
Through its new partnership with MCl, Namirei-Showa is now able to provide extensive servicing not only in the Far East but also in Europe.
