 −  International Code for the Construction and Equipment of ships carrying dangerous chemicals in bulk (IBC Code)

Amendments to the ISM Code
International Management Code for the Safe Operation of Ships and for Pollution Prevention (ISM Code)
 −  second phase, effective on 1 July 2002
 −  from that date the Code applies to general cargo ships and offshore units as well as passenger ships, oil tankers and bulk carriers
 −  must not become a paper exercise
 −  port State control on the alert
 
New safety-related mandatory Codes-1
International Code of Safety for High-Speed Craft, 2000 (2000 HSC Code)
Mandatory under SOLAS chapter X; will enter into force on 1 July 2002 and is based on the 1994 HSC Code. Caters for bigger, more technologically advanced craft and differs mainly in the following areas:
 −  stability and buoyancy (bottom damage, dynamic stability, load line certification, ro-ro inner bow door)
 −  accommodation and escape (design acceleration)
 −  fire safety (hazard areas, sprinkle systems, galleys, ventilation, carriage of dangerous goods)
 −  carriage of AIS and VDR
 
New safety-related mandatory Codes-2
International Code of Safety for Fire Safety Systems (FSS Code)
 −  Developed in conjunction with the new SOLAS chapter II-2 under which it is made mandatory; will enter into force on 1 July 2002
 −  Contains specific system-related technical requirements which need to be applied together with the purpose statement and functional requirements of the relevant SOLAS chapter II-2 regulations
 −  Provides international engineering specifications for fire safety systems required by SOLAS
 
Phasing-out single hull tankers
MARPOL 73/78 revised regulation I/13G: Prevention of oil pollution in the event of collision or stranding - Measures for existing tankers
 −  Contains a global timetable for accelerating the phasing-out of single hull oil tankers; will enter into force in September 2002
 −  Application of phase-out timetable is based on three categories of tankers (1,2 and 3), defined by deadweight, nature of cargo carried and compliance with protectively located segregated ballast tank requirements
 −  For Category 1 ships to continue trading after 2005 and Category 2 after 2010, they will need to comply with the new Condition Assessment Scheme (CAS)
