Safety-related amendments - 1
SOLAS 74, chapter II-1: Construction - Structure, subdivision and stability, machinery and electrical installations
 −  Regulation 3-4 on Emergency towing arrangements for tankers, to include capability for rapid deployment and more strength;
 −  New regulation 3-5 on New installation of materials containing asbestos, to prohibit use of asbestos; and
 −  Regulation 43 on Emergency source of electrical power in cargo ships, to cater for emergency lighting in cargo-pump rooms.

SOLAS 74 chapter V: Safety of navigation
Entirely revised chapter
New requirements of particular interest:
 −  Carriage of automatic identification systems (AIS) (regulation 19) on new ships, starting 1 July 2002, and on some existing ships from 1 July 2003
 −  Carriage of voyage data recorders (VDR) (regulation 19) on new ships and some existing ships, starting 1 July 2002

SOLAS 74 chapter X: Safety measures for high-speed craft
 −  Amendments to define the new 2000 HSC Code and make it mandatory under SOLAS. The current HSC Code was re-named as 1994 HSC Code, to distinguish it from the new 2000 HSC Code
 −  Also, aerodynamically supported craft such as Wing-in ground (WIG) craft were excluded from the definition of high-speed craft

SOLAS 74 and 1988 SOLAS Protocol: Form of Certificates
 −  In the Record of Equipment for the SOLAS 74 Passenger Ship Safety Certificate and the Cargo Ship Safety Equipment Certificate, the details of navigational systems and equipment were modified to reflect current requirements
 −  The same modifications were introduced in the corresponding certificates and in the Cargo Ship Safety Certificate under the 1988 SOLAS Protocol.
