Mitsui Engineering & Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. (MES) was founded in 1917, as the shipbuilding division of Mitsui & Co., Ltd. In 1937, the division was spun off Mitsui & Co. to become Tama Shipyard, Ltd., which was renamed Mitsui Engineering & Shipbuilding Co., Ltd., in 1942. Ever since its inauguration, MES has been committed to the pursuit of advanced technology and the supply of highly performance, high quality products.
MES constructs a variety of sophisticated ships including LNG carriers, vessels for government service and high speed passenger craft, together with offshore structures, in addition to conventional merchant ships such as large tankers and bulk carriers. MES is one of the most experienced shipbuilders in engineering and construction of LNG carriers, and MES is now active in sales promotion of both of MOSS and Membrane Type.
Also MES is the top builder of diesel engines in the world, both in total output and in technology. By July 2002, the aggregate power output of MES-built B&W diesels reached 40 million PS, the world record for diesel engines of any single make. Many of these diesels, installed as main engines for vessels built not only by MES but also by other shipyards both in Japan and abroad, are serving maritime transport across the world.
Our integrated capabilities backed by our highly reliable technology are contributing to society in many ways. We are committed to constant innovation to fulfill the dreams and aspirations of people everywhere from the global perspective.

In 1897, Uraga Dock, predecessor to Sumitomo Heavy Industries' Uraga Shipyard, was founded. It was Uraga where Japan's shipbuilding industry was born and Commodore Perry's "Black Ships" arrived during Edo era. Over the hundred years since its foundation, more than 1,100 ships have been built, including naval ships, passenger ships, cargo ships, work vessels, etc. In recent years, the shipyard is renowned for its construction of large sailing ships, naval ships and other special vessels. Yokosuka Shipyand, having started its operation from 1971, is a modern urban shipyard facing Tokyo bay, Since its opening, more than 200 vessels have been built. "SEAWISE GIANT", the world's largest tanker was also built there. At present, Yokosuka Shipyard is enjoying production of a variety of largesize vessels such as Aframax Tankers, Panamax Bulk Carriers, Car Carriers, etc. Yokosuka Shipyard has adopted computerized production systems since the beginning, and is today developing even more advanced CIM systems, called "SUMIRE" (Sumitomo manufacturing Innovation and Re-Engineering). SUMIRE has been implemented for the design process of vessels since 1997.
