Mr. Vilar, a 60-year-old Cuban-American, is renowned as one of the world's most generous philanthropists as well as one of its most successful technology investors. In 1980, he founded Amerindo Investment Advisors to manage portfolios invested in emerging technology stocks. Many of the companies he invested in over the last 20 years are now household names, including Microsoft, Oracle, Cisco, America Online and eBay.

　A firm believer in the importance of philanthropy, Mr. Vilar is an active supporter of healthcare, education, and the classical performing arts.

　In the field of music, Mr.Vilar has provided generous support for many of the world's leading musical institutions including the Metropolitan Opera House, Carnegie Hall, Washington's John F. Kennedy Center, the Royal Opera House in London, the Mariinsky(Kirov)Opera & Ballet Companies, the Salzburg Festival, Los Angles Opera and Musikverein, among many others.

　Mr. Vilar is equally committed to philanthropic support of education and healthcare and has underwritten gifts to many of the leading institutions in these fields including the Hospital for Special Surgery and Columbia Presbyterian Hospital in New York, and the National Jewish Medical Research Center in Denver; as well Harvard, New York University, and his alma mater, Washington & Jefferson College, in the field of education.
