The Maazel/Vilar Conductors' Competition was founded by Maestro Lorin Maazel and arts philanthropist Alberto Vilar to identify today's most talented young conductors and provide them with an exceptional opportunity for career development.

　For this first Competition more than 350 applicants were received from young conductors(up to age 35)in 43 different countries. The selection of candidates for each of the six regional rounds was made by Maestro Maazel after an extensive review of each application, which included detailed biographical information, a personal essay, letters of recommendation and audio/video examples of their work on the podium.

　Following the Tokyo regional round, the Competition will continue to audition conductors at five other sites worldwide(each with 8-10 candidates): Bloomington, Indiana, at the Indiana University School of Music(December 2001); Cracow, Poland, with the Sinfonietta Cracovia(January 2002); London,England,at the Royal College of Music(February 2002); Sao Paulo, Brazil, with the Orquestra Experimental de Repertorio in association with the Mozarteum Brasileiro(April 2002); and Sydney, Australia, with the Sydney Sinfonia(August 2002). Finalists from each region will be invited to Carnegie Hall in New York for a week of rehearsals and concerts with the Orchestra of St. Luke's in September 2002. Any or all of the finalists may be awarded the Competition's prize, which includes an intensive conducting fellowship with Lorin Maazel and other distinguished artists over a two to three year period, a cash award of $45,000 and select professional engagements. 　マゼール/ヴィラー国際指揮者コンクールは、ロリン・マゼール氏と芸術の分野に対して多大なる支援をしている篤志家アルベルト・ヴィラー氏によって世界各地の若手有望指揮者を発掘・育成することを目的に開催されます。そのアジア地域を対象とした初の地域予選会が東京で開催されることとなりました。最終選は、2002年9月ニューヨークのカーネギーホールで開催される予定です。

　今回の応募には350を越える申請が世界43カ国からありました。書類審査ではマゼール氏自らがすべての提出書類(プロフィール、小論文、推薦状、ビデオ)を入念に審査し、各地域予選の出場者が選ばれました。

　東京予選に続いて、次の5つの予選がそれぞれ8人から10人の出場者を対象に行われます。米国インディアナ州ブルーミントン市インディアナ大学音楽科協力(2001年12月)、ポーランド・クラカオ市クラカオ・シンフォニエッタ協力(2002年1月)、英国ロンドン市英国王立音楽学校協力(2002年2月)、ブラジル・サンパウロ市ブラジル・モーツアルト協会協力(2002年4月)、オーストラリア・シドニー市シドニーシンフォニア協力(2002年8月)。各地域の予選通過者は、2002年9月にカーネギーホールにおいてセント・ルーク・オーケストラとの本選に挑戦します。1名もしくは複数の優勝者に与えられる賞として2-3年間にわたるマゼール氏や他の指揮者たちとの集中指揮特待生の権利、45,000ドルの賞金、各地での演奏会出演などがあります。地域予選大会及び出場者に関する詳細は　www.maazel-vilar.org　をご参照ください。
