Daihatsu 16DK-28 Diesel Engine Developed
Daihatsu Diesel Mfg. Co., Ltd. has developed the V-type 16DK-28 engine as a new addition to the DK series of diesel engines.
Since their initial introduction, more than 2,000 engines of the DK series have been delivered to and been well accepted by their owners.
The recently developed model is the V-type version of the straight DK-28 engine, many units of which have been supplied to the market. The new model, capitalizing on the wealth of data built up through the marketing of the straight type and the latest computation techniques, will earn a place in the market as a model of perfection.
The target market actively approached for the 16DK-28 is power plant projects of independent power producers (IPPs) mainly using diesel plants of the 4,000 kWe/unit class in normal output, as well as emergency plants, in Southeast Asian countries.
The maximum power output of the new type engine is 5,208 kWm at 720/750 min-1. The addition of this model has enabled the DK series of straight and V types, with its four models (DK-20, 26, 28 and 36), to cover the whole output range from 350 kWm to 6,825 kWm without interruption.
Whereas environmental conservation is one of the foremost challenges in the world today, the new type engine not only consumes less fuel but also can fully meet other environmental requirements for low pollution (low NOx, low noise and low vibration).
The new model has been developed to embody the basic design concepts of the DK series.

Firstly, enhanced reliability and durability.
- Securing 20% margins for mechanical load and thermal load.
- Use of a horizontally trisected connecting rod.
- Use of optimal materials.
- Fully fireproof specification.
Secondly, a reduced number of component items and reduced maintenance cost through all-out pursuit of handling ease.
- Number of component items reduced by 40%.
- Enhanced disassembling and reassembling ease (through the use of hydraulic tools).
Thirdly, adequate consideration for the conservation of the global environment and the working environment.
- Reduced noise, vibration and NOx emissions.
Fourthly, combustion of low-quality fuel oil and pursuit of greater economy.
- Pursuit of enhanced efficiency.
Fifthly, a compact layout that achieves a high power output.
- Boosting the output per unit weight and per unit volume.
Embodying these design concepts, the new type diesel is intended to satisfy not only the current requirements of the market but also the needs of future users.
Committed to "friendliness to the earth," Daihatsu Diesel is keenly aware of the impacts on the global environment of harmful emissions in the exhaust gas of engines, and is working hard to develop engines that have cleaner emissions yet remain highly economical.
