New Hull Coating System CIT-21
Chugoku Marine Paints, Ltd. has developed CIT-21 (Chugoku Innovated Technology 21), a new hull coating system intended for rationalization of and labor saving as it concerns hull painting work and alleviation of the load placed on the environment.
Different parts of a hull require different coat performances, and as such different paints and different coat specifications, resulting in a great variety of paint types used per vessel. This fact greatly complicates painting work and its management. Requirements include, for instance, the resistance of the hull bottom to fouling, anti-corrosiveness of holds and ballast tanks, and weatherproofness of the superstructure and decks. The paints used can be classified by material into alkyd resin, chlorinated rubber, vinyl resin, epoxy resin and tar epoxy paints, and by function into the primer, brown coat and top coat.
CIT-21 has finally made a reality the long-cherished dream of hull painters by making available a single primer applicable to all subdivisions of the hull.
The most significant feature of CIT-21 is that all areas - including shell plating, decks, superstructure, holds and ballast tanks - can be collectively coated with a wear-resistant all-purpose epoxy primer (trade name: Bannoh 500). This revolutionary hull coating system is the first of its kind in the world. As the new system uses a retouching system featuring a simplified coating arrangement, maintenance after the vessel enters service is further facilitated. Its environmentally friendly features include tar-free highly anti-corrosive coating, non-use of solvents and tin-free anti-fouling coat.
As the CIT-21 system uses Bannoh 500 for the first coat on every area, this coat can be applied all over the vessel at the same time, resulting in more efficient painting work.
Bannoh 500 has the following features.
1. It excels in wear-proofness, shock resistance, resistance to blocks and adhesion to steel plates.
2. It is at least as waterproof and resistant to seawater as tar epoxy paints.
3. Containing no tar, it is a highly safe and sanitary paint (already approved by the FDA-Food and Drug Administration, Department of Health and Human Service, U.S.A.).
4. As it does not bleed into the outer coating, a variety of outer coats can be applied over it.
5. As its color is light, tank inspection can be made more efficient and painting work safer.
6. A thick coat can be formed in a single process.
