Background
1 At the last session, the Sub-Committee decided to develop stowage and segregation requirements for freight containers on containerships with partially weatherproof hatchway covers. The target completion year is 2001. For the consideration of this issue by the Sub-Committee, the investigation was carried out in Japan as presented in DSC 6/TNF.2.
Practicality of the proposed requirements regarding stowage plan
2 In Japan, case studies on planning of stowage of containers based on the examples of carriage in accordance with the proposed stowage and segregation requirements were carried out. Consequently, it is confirmed roughly that stowage plans for such container ships can be made. The case studies, however, were not exhaustive. Japan would like to invite Member Governments to carry out case studies on stowage planning under the proposed requirement.
Proposed amendments to the IMDG Code
3 Japan has prepared the draft stowage and segregation requirements for freight containers on containerships with partially weatherproof hatchway covers, i.e., the draft amendments to the IMDG Code, as in the annex of this paper.
