OBJECTIVE 10: Provide economic information and advice for the marine industry in WA

The diverse nature of the marine industry and the small size of many operators means that few have the opportunity to obtain and act on in house economic information.

ACTION

・Monitor the financial crisis in Asia and support the industry to diversify into other global markets.

・Prepares a case, in consultation with industry sectors, for a change in ABS statistics to make them more suitable and relevant for industry use and raise the issue of marine industry statistics with the appropriate Federal Minister.

OBJECTIVE 11: Encourage development of the marine industries in regional WA

Much of regional Western Australia has advantages, particularly of nearness to potential markets, that are not shared by metropolitan based industries. These need to be encouraged and their advantages made know to potential customers.

ACTION

・Work with Regional Development Commissions to create awareness of the various enterprise assistance programs operated by the department, particularly business planning and export planning modules.

OBJECTIVE 12: Encourage research and innovation necessary for the marine industries in WA

Recent success of the marine industries has been underpinned by research. Continued research and development is essential to continuing and building on these successes.

ACTION

・Develop a marketing strategy and key target list to attract relevant national and international research organisations.

・Monitor, in consultation with the stakeholders, technical innovation within the marine industry and the implications for future Government assistance.

・Review significant regional ocean research programs, with the aim of attracting increased activity from national and international programs of Indian Ocean research to Western Australia.
