OBJECTIVE 7: Review the potential and current level of activity of the local Oceanographic, meteorological and environmental services (OMES) industry
OMES groups in Western Australia have a wide range of capability and are well placed geographically to operate in the Indian Ocean region. Increased coordination is needed between industry, university and government instrumentalities. Efforts should be made to locate more national agencies in WA and increase international market penetration.
ACTION
・Form a review group to assess opportunities for the Western Australian OMES community arising from the emerging national Oceans Policy; and
・Emphasise the role of Western Australia as a regional source of OMES programs, with an offshore oil and gas industry emphasis.
OBJECTIVE 8: Review the potential for establishing an Intergovernment Oceanic Commission (IOC) office in Western Australia
The possibility of establishing an IOC office in Western Australia should be considered because of the prestige and spin off of technological benefits which would probably accrue.
ACTION
・Encourage the establishment of an IOC Branch Office being established in Western Australia.
・Form a working group charged with the preparation of a letter to UNESCO, from an appropriate Federal Government source expressing Australian interests in the IOC Branch Office concept and in developing a full project proposal.
OBJECTIVE 9: Review the potential for marketing marine-based educational programs overseas
Western Australian education and training for the marine industry should be encouraged both to meet the industry's requirements for skilled trades personnel and to seek export markets for existing courses.
ACTION
・Review opportunities, with educational institutions and industry, in marketing marine-related educational programs overseas and other students.
・Work with the MERA to make Western Australia an internationally recognised leader for innovative marine education and training programs.
