In July 2000 DaimlerChrysler AG announced its intention to acquire all of one of MTU's partner companies Detroit Diesel Corporation (DDC). They have since bought 98 per cent of DDC's shares. Initial plans for the Group's new structure suggest that MTU will be combined with the DaimlerChrysler Powertrain Division and DDC under the umbrella of the DaimlerChrysler Commercial Vehicles Division. If confirmed, this re-organisation will see MTU taking on greater responsibility for products for non-road vehicles and indeed becoming a centre of excellence for such systems within the Group. This new Division is expected to achieve a turnover in its first year of around DM 3 billion (Yen 147 billion).
