2.5 Research and Development
In 1998/99 MAN B&W Diesel invested DM 109.3 million (Yen 5,356 million) in research and development, equivalent to 5.5 per cent of sales revenue. MAN B&W's research and development centre, based at its Teglholmen Works in Copenhagen, was opened in 1992 and covers 1,100 sq.m. The building contains a workshop for instrumentation work on components for the research engine and for testing. Around 170 employees are engaged in research and development activities.
In line with new International Maritime Organisation (IMO) regulations work has also been undertaken in connection with reducing NOx emissions. As well as work on developing new engines R&D effort is also being expended on improving the performance, lifetime and operation of existing engines.

R&D for four stroke engines is carried out mainly in Augsburg, with assistance from staff based in the factories at Holeby and Frederikshavn. Over the past three years new engine development activities for four strokes have centred on the 500-3,000kW output range.
