CASE STUDY

Brooklyn marina implements lots of small but effective waste management practices

・We collect sump and gearbox waste from mechanical work and store the liquid in drums for collection by a recycler as required.

・Boat bilge water is drained through absorbent materials.

・We lease a workshop to a shipwright who collects and uses all the wood shavings for garden mulch.

Solid waste disposal

。?ollect all solid wastes that cannot be reused or recycled and dispose of them following EPA guidelines (available from Pollution Line). These wastes may include scrapings of marine growths, rags that cant be cleaned, empty containers that cannot be reused, brushes and blasting material.

。?ou must dispose of solid wastes contaminated with chemicals classified as hazardous wastes, such as antifouling paint, at an appropriate waste facility by a licensed waste transporter. Keep all receipts as proof of proper disposal.

。?ollect used abrasive blasting material and paint chips (particularly if they are poisonous anti-fouling or lead-based paints) by sweeping or vacuuming, and reuse the abrasive material where possible.

。?tore fines and waste material from abrasive blasting in sealed bins to stop wind from blowing it about.

。?pecial disposal requirements apply to classified hazardous or industrial wastes, such as contaminated sweepings, filters and spent abrasive material. Consult the EPA's Pollution

Line (Tel: 131 555) for advice on these requirements.
