Waste Management

What's all the fuss about waste?

NSW is making too much garbage, and the cost of transporting it and finding a place to put it has become a big problem. The NSW Government has set a target to reduce waste by 60% by 2000 and has brought in a new law and regulations to help make it happen. How?

。?irst, reduce your use of materials. Apart from anything else, this saves you money

。?econd, reuse materials. This saves more money.

。¬hird, send materials off to berecycled. This preserves scarce resources.

。?ast, only when you have tried the first three options should you dispose of material.

As industry and the community come to recognise the importance of waste minimisation, better waste management options, products and services will become available.

CASE STUDY

Solutions for waste management on the Parramatta River

'We had a large skip bin where patrons tossed their garbage after their day out on their boats. We found that by Monday morning the skip was overflowing and litter was scattered all over the ground. We now provide a number of 240 litre wheelie bins with lids on our wharf and reception areas, as well as our large skip bin.

'After a weekend on the water, boaties can generate a fair bit of waste. We encourage customers who moor or use our facilities to keep recyclables such as cans and glass in a separate box on board and to place disposable waste in a garbage bag. Space can be tight on boats so waste solutions need to be practical.'

What does this mean for marinas, boatsheds and slipways?

Marinas, boatsheds and slipways can create a lot of waste. Some of this waste - for example, containers, pallets and packaging - could be reused or recycled instead of going into your waste skip for landfill disposal.

Encourage your customers to use your waste recycling and disposal facilities.

Provide adequate waste receptacles

Some of your and your customers' wastes may be suitable for recycling.
