Wastewater from your business's processes and activities

Generally, businesses must have a written agreement or permit to discharge wastewater to the sewer. Wastewater organisations set limits on the concentration of pollutants allowed to be discharged.

Sydney Water Corporation, in the Sydney, Blue Mountains and Illawarra area, and Hunter Water Corporation, in the Newcastle region, are the two major wastewater organisations in NSW. Outside these areas trade wastewater is managed by councils, many of which require businesses to have trade waste facilities and permits.

The wastewater organisation will generally require some form of wastewater pre-treatment. Treatment methods may consist of the use of a settling tank or a pit, followed by a corrugated plate interceptor, and possibly filtering of the wastewater.
