◆Prevent degradation of the Marina and the Marina waterways by using controls for litter accumulation, recycling and waste disposal, consistent with the Department of Health guidelines. All controls should be maintained and emptied as required.

 

◆Inspect all surface drainage systems in order to identify potential blockages.

 

◆Remove any material which accumulates in drainage inlets or in the drainage system.

 

1.5 BEST MANAGEMENT PRACTICES FOR THE PROTECTION OF THE ENVIRONMENT AND WATERWAYS

 

MANAGEMENT TASKS

 

1.5.1 Commercial moorings should be grouped together to provide effective security safety and environmental management.

 

1.5.2 Regulations for Marina usage will contain clear directions prohibiting the use of marine toilets and automatic bilge pumps whilst within the Marina. These regulations will also include directions for the removal of sewage and bilge waste provided by the Marina.

 

1.5.3 Marina staff will undertake regular daily inspections of the waterway for detection of wasdte, debris, oil slicks and other matter and will trace the source thereof where possible. Pollution incidents should be reported to Marina management and the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA).

 

1.5.4 Provide a method whereby the spillage of fuels and oils. the spread of debris and other wastes can be contained.

 

1.5.5 Washing down of the topsides of vessels will be permitted using water only, or water with an approved standard of bio-degradable detergent.

 

1.5.6 Prevent and discourage in water hull cleaning. or any other underwater process, that is likely to remove anti-fouling or any other material deleterious to the marine environment.

 

1.5.7 Residue accumulated from the action of returning anti-fouling must not enter the waterways.

 

1.5.8 Residue from sandblasting and paint sanding of fibreglass must be contained and is prohibited from entering the waterways.

 

1.5.9 All residue from working practices must be collected daily and placed in appropriate recycling or disposal containers.

 

1.5.10 Management will be required to preserve the amenity of the Marina and adjacent area by restricting noise from work practices.

 

1.5.11 SIGNS:

 

(i) Will contain clear directions prohibiting the use of marine toilets and bilge pumps whilst at the Marina or mooring and the same time direct clients to the facilities available for the removal or such wastes.

(ii) Ensure that the Marina users, shop patrons, visitors, tourists and the public generally are provided with clearly defined signs to ensure their observance of all matters concerned with safety, health and other environmental aspects.

 

(iii) For reasons of safety, security of property and hazard prevention, the hours of business of the Marina should be clearly displayed.
