Nakashima's Controllable Pitch Thruster Model TCT
Nakashima Propeller Co., Ltd. has developed a new, more powerful and compact, TCT model of controllable pitch thruster by thoroughly improving its earlier TC type controllable pitch thruster, based on the company's wealth of performance records and experience in the manufacture of main propellers and auxiliary propellers.
■Freatures of the Nakashima's Controllable Pitch Thruster TCT
- High Performance
The new type thruster a rank lower in diameter can generate substantially the same thrust as its earlier counterpart. This means that the duct (thruster tunnel) can be reduced in diameter correspondingly and the drop in ship's speed due to the tunnel opening can be restrained accordingly.
- Reduced Overall Length of the Thruster
Model TCT is shorter in overall length than the comparable TC product. Coupled with the increased thrust, this results in an over 20% reduction in length compared with the earlier model to generate the same thrust (though the extent of reduction differs from version to version). As a result, this thruster can be fitted closer to the bow even for a vessel of a fine hull form, such as a containership, to enhance the turning moment working on the vessel.
- Reduced Number of Parts
The new type thruster consists of a smaller number of parts, resulting in greater reliability and maintenance case.
- Shaft Sealing Equipped with (Lip Type) Stern Tube Seals
Even in a contingency of sealing trouble, the drive unit need not be disassembled, but the repair can be accomplished by bonding.
- Low Vibration and Low Noise Design
The TCT type thruster is equipped with forward skewed blades, which was developed by Nakashima ahead of others and enjoys an established reputation for low vibration and low noise. The blade section, developed area ratio, skew distribution and other relevant factors are optimally designed to be compatible with high input power.
The superiority of forward skew for side thruster blades has been endorsed by the recently increasing number of thruster manufacturers who have adopted forward skew and are marketing products with forward skewed blades as low noise thrusters.
The cross-sectional shape of gear housing supports is also designed with particular care to minimize the disorder i of water flow.
- Structure of CPP Model XL Adopted for Propeller Hub
The propeller hub of the TCT type uses the structure for Nakashima's controllable pitch propeller Model XL, many units of which have been delivered for installation on large merchant ships. It is a highly reliable structure with a servo cylinder arranged within the hub.
