These are large-size large-capacity screw pumps developed to enhance capabilities to cope with extensive oil spill accidents.
Each pump can draw 250m3 of spilt oil per hour. This is about five times the capacity of any usual pump for the purpose, which ranges from 5m3/h to 50m3/h.
In view of the frequent occurrence of crude oil spill accidents in recent years and their tendency to increase in scale, the Fourth District Port Construction Bureau of the Ministry of Transport ordered the construction of a large oceangoing dredger-cum-oil skimmer for use in extensive oil spill accidents. The vessel, named the "Kaisho Maru," is under construction at the Tokyo shipyard of Ishikawajima-Harima Heavy Industries Co., Ltd. for completion in October 2000. The 4,300 GT "Kaisho Maru" and the 3,600 GT "Seiryu Maru" belonging to the Fifth District Port Construction Bureau will make up a highly capable fleet to serve oil skimming assignments even in open seas.
The oil skimming pumps to be installed aboard the "Kaisho Maru" are designed to be compatible with a wide range of oil viscosity, each capable of drawing:
・250m3/h of seawater or low-viscosity oil for 40m with a power of 37.8kw at 378rpm, or
・250m3/h of high-viscosity oil (8,000est) for 40m with a power of 45.5kw at 342rpm.
The operation of the pumps, driven by hydraulic motors, can be adapted to variable oil viscosity under remote control.
Two sets of two such pumps each, one set for each broadside, will be installed aboard the vessel, and when all the four pumps are operated, 1,OOOm3/h of liquid can be recovered.
The dimensions of each set of pumps are:
・1.5m in breadth ・1m in length and ・4m in height,
・weighing 3,370kg per set.
