サラサーテ(1844-1908)は、パガニーニと並び称せられる19世紀のスペインが生んだ最大のヴァイオリニスト。自らが演奏するために高度な技巧を駆使した多くのヴァイオリン曲を作曲している。代表作として人気の高いこの曲は、ジプシーの音楽が題材となっており、フラジオレット、左手のピッツィカートなどの名人芸等、あらゆる技巧がこの曲に結集されている。
One of the greatest Spanish virtuoso violinist and composer. Pablo de Sarasate (1844-1908) is known to have composed music, which requires high violin techniques. His advanced violin skills are comparable to those by Nicolo Paganini. Sarasate was keenly attracted to varieties of folk music from all over the world, and this famous piece was drawn from Hungarian gypsy music.

幼いときからヴァイオリンの神童と言われたサラサーテの演奏の特徴は、甘美をきわめた純粋な音と言われる。サラサーテの作品も同様に音色の美しさと、細密な技巧を極度に発揮するように書かれている。この曲のように古いスペイン歌劇の中の旋律、民謡などを編曲したものが多い。
Sarasate's violin performances were distinguished by the tone of unsurpassed sweetness and purity. Not only as a violinist, but also as a composer he placed emphasis in bringing out the violin's exquisite tone and precise techniques. Often times, he arranged and incorporated traditional Spanish operas and folk songs in his works.
