Maurice Ravel (1875-1937) is one of the most famed French composers. Ravel devoted to the splendor of French style music, but has also experimented boldly and successfully with different musical forms. 'Tzigane' (gypsy in French) is a dramatic arrangement of the gypsy music. This piece, incorporating various advanced violin techniques, is very popular among the highly skilled violinists today.

Jewish-American composer of Swiss origin, Ernst Bloch (1880-1959), established himself a reputation as a 'Jewish' composer with much Jewish colour in his music. For Bloch, music was a spiritual expression. In this piece "Nigun", he dramatically expressed a situation in which a man has gone through repentance and now seeking salvation.

The opera 'Thais' is one of the important works by French composer, Jules-Emile-Frederic Massenet (1842-1912), who is known for his sensuous melodies and rhythms. "Meditation" is the interlude in the opera, suggesting the changes occurring in the mind of the heroine Thais, who is leaving the life of pleasure for religious cause.
