2. Rapid Dispatch of Rescue Units to the Scene

 

(1) Immediate Response System to Maritime Distress

In order to dispatch rescue forces to the rescue objectives in times of maritime accidents, JCG maintains a 24-hour watch system at its Coast Guard Offices, air stations, special rescue stations, radio stations and at its regional Coast Guard Headquarters and JCG Headquarters.

 

(2) Japanese Ship Reporting System

JCG operates the Japanese Ship Reporting System (JASREP), in order to solicit cooperation with rescue efforts from civilian vessels navigating nearby those in distress, and to carry out rescue operations promptly.

 

3. Enhancement of Rescue Capabilities

 

(1) Haneda Special Rescue Station

Haneda Special Rescue Station is charged with special rescue missions which require very sophisticated knowledge and skills, such as rescues from vessels in distress carrying dangerous materials, lifesaving from ships which are capsized, on fire, or sunk, and rescues by special rescue crews go down to vessels from a helicopter. Currently, Haneda Special Rescue Station has five special rescue teams of six rescuers each, and is on alert 24 hours a day to respond to special rescue cases anywhere in the country. In 1999, the Haneda Special Rescue Station's teams were dispatched to 151 rescues, saving 122 persons. Since its inception in October 1975, the station has carried out more than 2,000 rescue operations and saved more than 1,000 persons.

 

(2) Patrol Vessels With Scuba Capabilities and Enhanced Rescue Capabilities

JCG has patrol vessels designated as the patrol vessels with scuba capabilities.
