II Efforts to Improve Rescue Rates
1. Prompt Gathering of Information on Accidents
In order to carry out swift and accurate rescue operations, it is of vital importance to collect accident information as promptly as possible. For this purpose, JCG monitors distress frequencies responding to the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System* (GMDSS) around the clock at its 22 coastal radio stations nationwide and by using its patrol vessels and crafts in operation, and introduced the emergency dial '118' thereby improving its ability to gather accident information at the initial stage and to immediately respond to distress alert (refer to Diagram 6).
* GMDSS (Global Maritime Distress and Safety System): The Global System collects maritime accident information promptly and provides appropriate maritime safety information, using satellite and digital communication technologies.
