2. Rescue for Maritime Accidents

 

(1) Maritime Accidents

1] Rescue of Persons Aboard Vessels Requiring Rescue

In 1999, of the 7,140 persons aboard vessels requiring rescue, JCG carried out rescue operations for 5,248 persons (74%), mobilizing, in total, 2,966 patrol vessels and craft, 711 aircraft, 395 members of the special rescue team. Of these 5,248 persons, JCG rescued 1,953 persons, and combined with those rescued by other agencies, 5,317 persons were rescued, representing a rescue rate (percentage of persons aboard vessels rescued against those who were aboard vessels requiring rescue, excluding those who rescued themselves) of 97% (compared with 97% in 1998).

2] Rescue of vessels requiring rescue

In 1999, of the 1,920 vessels requiring rescue, JCG carried out rescue operations for 1,311 vessels (68%). Of these, JCG rescued 435 vessels and combined with vessels rescued by other agencies, 1,402 vessels were rescued, representing a rescue rate (percentage of vessels rescued against vessels requiring rescue, excluding those which returned to port by their own means) of 82% (compared with 84% in 1998).

 

(2) Non-Distress Accidents Involving People

1] Rescue of Persons Aboard Involved in Non-Distress Accidents

In 1999, of the 829 persons aboard involved in non-distress accidents, JCG carried out rescue operations for 468 persons (56%), mobilizing, in total, 892 patrol vessels and craft, 352 aircraft, and 37 members of the special rescue team. Of these 468 persons, JCG rescued 134 persons and combined with those rescued by other agencies, 292 persons were rescued, representing a rescue rate (percentage of persons rescued involved in accidents against those who met with accident, excluding those who rescued themselves) of 48% (compared with 44% in 1998).
