2. Improvement of the System for Obtaining Information on Maritime Recreation Accidents

 

In order to promptly and accurately collect information on accidents, and other incidents, related to maritime recreation activities, JCG promoted the use of radio for maritime recreational activities and introduced an easy-to-remember three-digit emergency dial '118' from 1 May, 2000, in order to enable direct communication with regional coast guard headquarters in charge, in the event of emergencies, such as maritime accidents and other incidents.

1. Occurrences of Maritime Accidents

 

(1) Maritime Accidents

In 1999, 1,920 vessels required rescue (compared with 1,726 vessels in 1998), involving 7,140 victims in distress (compared with 7,840 in 1998), of whom 146 either died or went missing (compared with 157 in 1998).

 

(2) Non-Distress Accidents Involving People

In 1999, there were 829 (compared with 766 in 1998) persons involved in non-distress accidents, including persons falling overboard and injury and illness occurring onboard, in which 319 (compared with 311 in 1998) either died or went missing.

In 1999, there were 1,796 persons (compared with 1,732 in 1998) involved in seashore accidents, of whom 1,136 (compared with 1,130 in 1998) either died or went missing.
