3. Violations of Laws Related to Maritime Affairs

 

In 1999, JCG sent 4,028 cases of violations of laws related to maritime affairs to the Public Prosecutor's Office. Of these, small boats, such as recreational craft, accounted for the largest proportion with 2,920 cases (72%) followed by fishing vessels (551 cases), and cargo ships (341 cases).

 

III Security Missions Against Strife at Sea, etc., and Guard and Escort Operations

 

1. Security Missions Against Strife at Sea, etc.

 

In 1999, JCG carried out a total of 636 security missions against strife at sea, etc. These included: security missions accompanying the entry and departure of warships in port; security missions accompanying the maritime transport of nuclear materials; security missions related to disputes and other incidents arising from the construction of nuclear power plants and airports; and security missions relating to U.S. military base issues.

 

2. Response to Special Security Missions

 

JCG has established the Osaka Special Security Station so that it is able to respond swiftly and accurately to special maritime security incidents requiring expertise, for example, sea-jacks and incidents in which poisonous gases are used, such as sarin.
