Response to the Mt. Usu Eruption Disaster (March 2000 onwards)

On 31 March 2000, Mt. Usu, located south of Lake Toya in Hokkaido, erupted bellowing black smoke.

JCG established the Headquarters for the Response to the Mt. Usu Eruption Disaster at its Headquarters, 1st Regional Coast Guard Headquarters and Muroran Coast Guard Office respectively, where it immediately rushed its patrol vessels and craft and aircraft. As regards the waters at the scene of the eruption, aircraft carried out surveys and inspections from the air, and patrol vessels and craft alerted vessels navigating the adjacent sea and fisheries cooperatives in the surrounding area, supported warnings for scallop farming as well as making preparations including sheltering residents from the sea, and the transportation of emergency materials.

 

Initiation of the Provision of a World Geodetic System Nautical Chart (April 2000)

On 20 April 2000, JCG published six nautical charts, including Japan's first-ever World Geodetic System Nautical Chart W1062 of central Tokyo Bay.

 

Holding of the Regional Conference on Combating Piracy and Armed Robbery Against Ships (April 2000)

Delegates of coast guard agencies, maritime affairs policy authorities, and other entities from Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) countries and countries in East Asia, attended the Regional Conference on Combating Piracy and Armed Robbery Against Ships held in Tokyo for three days from 27 to 29 April 2000.
