Promotion of Public Relations and Regional Alliance (April, May 2000)

During April and May 2000, JCG decided on its logo, logo design and motto so that the public at large would be able to easily understand the work it is involved in.

 

Initiation of the '118' Emergency Dial (May 2000)

On 1 May 2000, JCG initiated the application of the '118' emergency dial−an easy to remember, three-digit number requiring no dialing code−as an emergency telephone number for reporting maritime incidents and accidents, similar to '110' for the police, and '119' for firefighting services.

 

Response Toward a New Fisheries Order Between Japan and China (June 2000)

On 1 June 2000, the Agreement between Japan and People's Republic of China on Fisheries Agreement entered into force. The Agreement sets out the establishment of a new fisheries order between the two countries.

Prior to the entry into force of the new Agreement, JCG strove to implement a smooth start to the new fisheries order between Japan and China by publicizing the new Agreement as best it could through the distribution of leaflets to Chinese fishing boats in collaboration with the Fisheries Agency, for example.

 

G8 Kyushu-Okinawa Summit 2000 Maritime Security (July 2000)

As regards the July 2000 Kyushu-Okinawa Summit, the G7 Finance Ministers' Meeting was held in Fukuoka on 8 July, the G8 Foreign Ministers' Meeting was held in Miyazaki from 12 to 13 July, and the G8 Kyushu-Okinawa Summit Meeting 2000 was held in Okinawa from 21 to 23 July 2000.

The majority of the principal facilities, such as the venue for the Kyushu-Okinawa Summit and the lodging facilities, faced coastal areas, and particularly in Okinawa since the facilities under security were spread out over a vast area, JCG implemented its largest-ever maritime security operation, deploying approximately 100 patrol vessels and approximately 20 aircraft.
