Protocol on Preparedness, Response and Co-operation to Pollution Incidents by Hazardous and Noxious Substances, 2000 (OPRC-HNS Protocol) (March 2000)

In March 2000, the Protocol on Preparedness, Response and Co-operation to Pollution Incidents by Hazardous and Noxious Substances, 2000 (OPRC-HNS Protocol) was adopted at a diplomatic conference held at the International Maritime Organization's (IMO) headquarters.

 

Decision on How to Preserve 17 Lighthouses From the Meiji Era (March 2000)

Of the lighthouses and other facilities established to ensure the safety of vessel traffic, 66 remain that were built in the Meiji era (1868-1912) and are functioning actively even now. Thirty-three of these are considered to be particularly valuable as historical and cultural assets, and between November 1991 and March 2000, JCG established a Historical Lighthouse Facility Preservation Committee composed of experts in the history of construction and architecture, and reviewed preservation methods taking into account conditions such as the construction of the lighthouses and the degree to which they have aged, and construction techniques at the time they were built. Consequently, preservation methods were determined for 17 lighthouses that required reinforcing.

 

Initiation of the Experiment for an Ultramodern Laser Traffic Route System (March 2000 onwards)

JCG has been advancing development of technology for marking traffic routes by drawing courses on the surface of the sea, similar to traffic lanes on roads, and begun the experiment in March 2000.
