2.4.3 Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Ltd.
(1) Development of new model
In 1998, the first S-MC-C type engine of Kawasaki-MAN B&W 6S46MC-C type and 6S50MC-C type engines were completed, and in 1999, same type engines were carried out. All of the first series were 6 cylinder engines, but in this year, a 7 cylinder engine of 7S50MC-C type as the main engine for the PANAMAX bulk carrier and an 8 cylinder engine of 8S50MC-C type as the main engine for the ROIRO ship were produced and supplied.
As for the large sized engine, 7S80MC Mk6 type as the main engine for the VLCC tanker of 300,000 DWT class was produced. The brake mean effective pressure of this engine was risen from 17 bar to 18 bar in order to increase the power output. Table 2.4.3 indicates the principal particulars of the above mentioned engines.
(2) Reform of product facilities
The new manufacturing and assemble line for the engines of 60cm cylinder bore class was set in order to better productive ability. A built up engine on a roller bench is moved toward to the test bed, and the trial run is done by connected with the dynamometer. After this, the engine is moved towards the cam by air pallet and shipped. This system contributes to better quality by effective manufacturing and simplification of assembling. Fig.2.4.3 shows an outline.

1) 8DK-36 type diesel engine
The general view and the principal particulars of the engine are indicated in Fig.2.4.5 and Table 2.4.5, respectively. The engine is equipped with in-line type 8 cylinders derived from the V-type l2DK-36 type engine of the maximum output in the company, and at the same time 6DK-36 type engine was also developed.
