ABSTRACT
Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. has developed the new MET-SE II Series of exhaust gas turbochargers, featuring the same external dimensions as the preceding MET-SE Series, but with expanded capacity. The design used for this capacity expansion was then applied in the development of the MET90SE model, which exceeds the size of the MET83SE, formerly the largest model produced. Accordingly, expansions in the dimensions of the MET90SE were kept to a minimum, while a 30% gain in capacity was achieved in comparison with the MET83SE. This report presents the technological features of the MET-SE II 90SE, as well as test results.

1. INTRODUCTION
Marine diesel engines have recently tended towards increasingly higher outputs, and mean effective pressure is now in excess of 1.9 MPa. In this conjunction, demands have come to be seen for large capacity turbochargers that have a high pressure ratio and allow for the efficient supply of scavenging air. In addition, demand is continuing around the world for large container ships, and an increasing number of large-scale diesel engines are being produced with cylinder diameters of 90 cm or more. Accordingly, in order to supply highly reliable and compact turbochargers, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI) has developed the MET-SE II Series featuring higher capacity for the same sizes, as well as large-scale MET90SE which exceeds the size of the MET83SE, formerly the largest model on offer. Air flow ranges for the MET-SE II Series are shown in Fig.1.
2. MET-SE SERIES TURBOCHARGERS
2.1 Overview
A history of MET turbochargers is presented in Fig.2. At total of 175 MET-SE Series turbochargers have been shipped since the development of the first model, the MET83SE, in 1997.
2.2 Structure
A dismantled view of an MET-SE turbocharger is shown in Fig.3.
