The whole country is unified by Nobunaga and Hideyoshi. The Maeda family controls the provinces of Kaga, Noto and Etchu. Toshinaga Maeda,the second lord, builds Takaoka Castle under the design of Ukon Takayama, a christian daimyo who is staying in the Kaga domain as a guest. A new town with a population of 5,000 is born.
A Noh play is performed in the castle. Every year a Noh play is included in MUGENTAN as a play within a play. The title this year is “Yashima.”
Yakamochi and Hanishi appear there. Attracted by the lively atmosphere, they do the sights of the town. Casting industry develops. The streets are alive with people dancing to a folk song “Yagaefu.”But the Shogunate implements a policy in which one domain can only have one castle. Takaoka Castle is ordered to be dismantled and the town falls into crisis. Toshitsune Maeda, the third lord carries out various economic policies to revive Takaoka. He builds a rice granary at the site of the castle and makes the town a trading center of salt and cotton. Fushiki Port becomes prosperous as the biggest commercial port in the Hokuriku district.
Now a spectacular dance entitled “Fushiki-Hobashiraokoshi-Iwaiuta,”the highlight of this play, is performed on the open-air stage.
