The scene is based on “The Suicide of the Provincial Constable of Etchu” in Volume 11 of the Taiheiki. Time has passed and poltical power has shifted from the Fujiwara Clan to the Taira Clan, to the Minamoto Clan, and finally to the Hojo Clan. Now Takatoki Hojo, the 14th shogunal regent of the Kamakura Shogunate, is infatuated with dengaku dance and dog fights. The country is in a chaotic state. Emperor Godaigo holds secret conferences, aiming to overthrow the Shogunate, but his plot is discovered and he is banished to the Oki Islands. His son, Prince Kosho is also banished to Etchu and prisoned at Futazuka, Takaoka.In 1333 Emperor Godaigo escapes from the island and the forces that rally to him,including Takauji Ashikaga and Yoshisada Nitta,set strong movements on foot to overthrow the Shogunate everywhere in the country. The regent has Prince Kosho assasinated for fear of future troubles. The vassals of the Shogun in Etchu, who have been disaffected to the Shogunate, are on the Emperor's side and attack Tokiari Nagoe, the provincial constable of Etchu and defeat him. Just after the battle, Yakamochi appears in the battlefield. Taken for their enemy, he is nearly killed with a sword, when Hanishi, ordered by the muse to guide him in his travels、appears and saves him from death.
